HOLLYWEIR..OH F*** IT

Category: UncategorizedSpike Spencer FG @ 1:52 am

Hey folks,

Well, it’s been a while since I have thrown something up here and well, let’s juts say a lot has been going on in Hwood.
I am not going to get into it because I just came in from a night of partying and it will take me a very long time to proofread this mother.

Let me just say this, in the last week I have been to no less than 5 Holiday parties. I have several planned for the near future, including a drunken Santa pub crawl I may attend, running up to my birthday on the 21st which I am hoping that I do not remember so much. That just means TMZ is not far behind…

I wish all of you the absolute most wonderful Christmas season. Go out and enjoy family and friends and know that you have a deviant cousin out there doing silly and stupid things on your behalf. And also know that he “behalfing” a great time doing it all. HAHAHAHAHA!!

Category: UncategorizedSpike Spencer FG @ 12:08 am

Well, I guess I have to write something…. Hmmm, what to write…. I can try to make my life sound exciting. And actually sometimes it really is. Right now I’m just chillin in my crib. had some lovely leftover red wine braised lamb shanks that I made a few days back with a bottle of Chianti. Another beautiful day in L.A. was had by all. Had dealings recently with a lovely ex Playboy playmate and a Jedi, both of whom I am quite fond. Just landed a nice VO gig that I cannot tell you about, but it is something from my childhood. Imagine being able to be the voice of a story you grew up with. Pretty frickin cool!

Booking some Cons for next year and hoping to have a LOT of awesome travel adventures. Sans jail time would be nice :) . Going to watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes tomorrow night at the SAG theater in Hwood. Recently caught George Clooney there at his screening of “The Descendents.” Really good movie; tragic, funny, quirky and great performances all around. Was invited to that by my very talented friend Leah Cevoli who is on Robot Chicken and was on Deadwood.

So that’s it for the update. Hopefully there will be more awesomeness coming soon. Til then, hang out with friends and do as we do here and have a gathering night around a TV show. We do it around “Terra Nova” right now. I know, it’s not that great, but every time they say “Sixer”, we drink. So it works out pretty darn well.

Chat with you Katz laters!

11-11-11

So here we are at a date that we will never see again in our lifetimes. Big frickin woop. Anyhoo…..

So it is Veteran’s Day here in the U.S. and I would like to sincerely thank all the veterans of our military and all the militaries of the world who have fought with us against tyranny and evil. If it were not for those brave men and women, we would not enjoy the freedoms that we do in this country. God Bless each and every one of you. And when you see a soldier out there in the world, go over to them and say thank you. Thank you for putting your life on the line and being willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for me. You are awesome!

Now back to the Hollywood nuttiness. So Comikaze Expo happened this past weekend. My panel with Wendee Lee, Christopher Smith, Stephanie Sheh, and Michael Sinterniklaas went very well. Everyone had a lovely time. And I also got to moderate a panel of lovely and talented Geek women including Cricket Lee, Leah Cevoli, Stephanie Thorpe, Kristen Nedopak, Helenna Santos Levy, and Jessica Mills. I gotta say, those Geek girls are just gettin hotter and hotter. Gonna have to get me one of those.

At the Con I finally got to meet Virginia Hey of Farscape fame. Lovely person, she was. Got to chat with some old Con acquaintances like Erin Gray, Vernon Wells, and my saucy ex Playboy Playmate friend Max Wasa. Yummy. And there was an interesting mix of folks at the convention center that were not part of our con. In fact, there were a large number of Latinos attending a huge church and when we were walking down the corridor to our panel room, there was a huge line. We thought it was for us until we reached the front and saw the large “<—— CONFESSIONAL” sign at the front. Well, we were excited for a bit.

This week I voiced a strange little video (game?) as well. I got to voice the little son of a character voiced by none other than Christopher Smith. And the thing was directed by an awesome fella named Patrick Seitz. Fun was had by all.

Last night I attended a screening of George Clooney’s latest film called The Descendants. It was terrific; well balanced, quirky, smartly funny and tragic. Beautifully done and I highly recommend it. Afterwards there was a Q&A with George, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster and several other cast members. They were all really great and fun people.

So tonight I head out to a screening and then maybe an after party at PMX. So if you don’t hear from me again; I had a great time……. Oh, and I might need bail money.

11-3-11

So what is happening here… Hmmm. Well since the Magic Castle caught a small fire, my Halloween was shot. I have spent most of my Halloweens there the past 6 years. :(
So I stayed at home watching TV and eating a little candy instead. Woot, indeed.

Yesterday I voiced a Chilean James Bond type movie. Not my best work of course, but money is a good thing, me like. I also had a lovely Skype interview with an Anime club in San Antonio. May be heading out for a live appearance in the spring. I have a team phone coaching session for my VO Marketing Group today (I’m a head coach) and another VO session for, uh, well, I don’t know exactly. But I’m sure it will be interesting.
****************
So okay, now it’s Saturday. The VO was directed by my pal Patrick Seitz. Always fun to work with him. literally, it was 7 lines of dialogue and I played a child and 2 other characters. Still not exactly sure what the heck it was. LOVE those gigs though. In and out and off ya go! Although last week’s gig with Wendee Lee was all kinds of silly and awesome too. Only an hour and a half, but so much laughing. Oh the things I get to say in this line of work. One example, I got to say, “No, you can’t. I pee from it.” You fill in the rest dear friends. Crazaaay!

Comikaze Expo (www.comikazeexpo.com) starts today and I will be making an appearance there tomorrow with the amazing and talented Wendee Lee, Christopher Smith, and Stephanie Sheh. I may head over today to walk around and mingle and such, not sure yet. I’m also moderating for a panel of lovely and accomplished ladies of Geekdom at 4pm tomorrow and possibly drinks after? Hmmm….

Well, it is another perfectly beautiful day here in LaLa Land. And the sky’s the limit on what can happen. So enough typing for this little blog o’ mine and off to do something to prepare for some silliness.

Stay Thirsty, My Friends,

HEAR YE, HEAR YE…

Category: UncategorizedSpike Spencer FG @ 4:41 pm

So here I sit in my lofty 8th floor perch in Koreatown, near downtown L.A. To the west, unobstructed views of Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, almost all the way out to the ocean on a clear day, and amazing sunsets each night. And for you “Angel” fans, I can just make out the Los Altos Apartment building used as their hotel home base for fighting ghoulies and such from my window. To the east, less than 2 miles away stands the panoramic view of the city you all have seen destroyed in movies for decades. Though my view is lovely, I am pondering a possible move into Hollywood proper about 2 blocks from our touristy center of Mann’s Chinese Theater. I would be closer to almost everything that matters in my life and maybe a welcome shake up and a change of scenery is what is needed. We shall see what happens. But for now, I need to move in baby steps, starting with getting my ass to start writing again. Not literally, I actually use my hands.

I start my day with a lovely breakfast of freshly ground Kona Coffee, an omelette of sauteed garlic, tomatoes, parmesan, and carmelized onions. Not as fluffy and light as I like my omelettes, but that just goes to show you what using a new pan can do to your cooking. Ah, the learning curve. I fire up a savory piece of toast from the loaf of sun dried Italian bread I made yesterday, slather it with a little butter and yum! All of this after I drop a 4 pound roast of corned beef in the slow cooker for a nice taste o’ Ireland to feed me and my soul for quite awhile. My apartment will smell of St. Paddy’s Day and my neighbors will once again hate me for it. But I digress…

So what to write, hmm, what to write….. Well, this is the first blog entry in awhile. Mea Culpa, my minions. To spur me in my actions, I recently sent out an email to my minions and garnered their input on how to make my site more interesting. Thank you to everyone who wrote in and gave me suggestions. So here is what I am going to attempt to do. I will be adding more pics of past Con action and new Hollywood goings on. I will attempt to blog more by gum! Some of the blogs will be about past exploits, but they will be interesting. They will be to the best of my ability to remember. Sometimes through a foggy party induced haze filter, but nevertheless as clear as I can make them.

Also planning on doing some podcasts! Yeppers, I will be doing something I think I shall call Spike Spencer’s Happy Hour. I’ll sit down and share a cocktail with some of the VO world’s finest and coolest. Not to mention spending some quality time with some of my other fabulous and interesting Hollywood friends. I am also announcing some changes in my other websites as well. Worldospike.com will be deleted. All my main stuff will be going through Spikespencer.com for my professional site and Almostevilminions.com will remain the same. I am toying with a couple of new sites as well, a food blog and a travel/adventure blog site. More to come about those.

I sit here tapping away at my laptop, incense burning, coffee steaming, morning sun filtering through my semi closed drapes as I watch, between thoughts that I drop in here, my latest SciFi “research” on TV. Today I am catching up on a one season alien thriller called “Threshold.” I am on a multi year crusade (Crusade was my last week’s research, btw) to get caught up on every SciFi show I can. I am studying every aspect of SciFi because that is my goal; to be a series regular on a SciFi TV show and/or a major role in a SciFi movie with franchise capabilities. Yep, that’s what a Hollywood actor does, “research.” Although, for me, it’s fun because I get to see several of my friends on screen and shoot kudos their way. And one day soon, I will join them. And yes, I can admit it here, SciFi is where I get my geek on.

So here we go folks. I will attempt to write often and intriguingly about many a topic. Sadly, at this moment I have no Cons, save one, in my future. I will be appearing at Comikaze expo this weekend. May get to meet Stan Lee again. Maybe he’ll give me a quick interview for my Happy Hour. Who knows. I just don’t really have much going on right now, although I did go sailing with my lovely Jedi friend Nalini last weekend. Yep, she was in Attack of the Clones and on the boat with me. Kinda cool.

So if you would like to keep me from being bored, sad, and curled up in a sobbing ball o’ pathetic mush and would rather see me at a Con near you, get on those computers, make those fingers fly on forums and blog sites and every doggone Con site you can get ahold of! I would love to come out and play. And I will do my best to make some crazy goings on in my life more accessible to those few that give a flyin frog fart about my hollywood shenanigans here on my MinionBlog!

The Con at the End of the World

The Con At The End Of The World

Wine, Women, and Song In Perth, Australia; The Most Isolated City On The Planet.

First Stop: Sydney

Enroute to Perth for a Con called Wai-Con, my pal Dave and I stop in Sydney for a few days to soak up all the city has to offer. Having been to the city several times it is my delight and duty to play tour guide. And tour we did. We were fortunate enough to visit the city during Australia Day. Now as fate would have it, my pal Dave is a world-class magician as is one of his friends from down under, Phil Cass, Australia’s #1 magician. So I get to spend my first Australia Day on a 25-foot fishing boat touring all around Sydney harbor with these 2 awesome katz and Phil’s lovely girlfriend. We listened to Jazz from the waters off of Darling Harbor, did a bit of fishing at the headlands. Dave caught one, but it got away, slippery little bastard; the fish, not Dave. Then we had a relaxing cookout on the boat while floating near the Taronga Zoo, listening to the Elephants, well, doing whatever Elephants do. Scantily clad 20-somethings on nearby boats danced and swam while mindless techno rave music thumped in the background. And much beer was consumed.

The day was lovely and we anxiously awaited sunset so we could witness the evening’s fireworks celebration extravaganza. One problem. We were on the Opera side of the bridge and the fireworks were in Darling Harbour. As we started hearing the faint booming sounds and flashes of light pulsating on the other side of downtown, we knew something had gone horribly awry. We gunned the engine and shot under the bridge like we were in a scene from Apocalypse Now, but sadly to no avail. We made it round the bend as the last lights were a-flickerin. Phil still blames the Elephants for some reason. Well, not the best end to the day, but what a day.

Whist in the city, I got to do one of my favorite things in the world, and that is to take a nice jog across the Sydney Harbor Bridge in the morning just as the sun is burning off the creeping fog and the Opera House slowly emerges to greet the day. We enjoyed a lovely full-on Australian breakfast, had the requisite meat pies from Harry’s Café de Wheels in Woolloomooloo, strolled through Paddy’s Market and
Chinatown, and took a side trip to Bondi with my Jedi friend Nailini Krishan, who played Bariss Offee in Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones. God bless ya Nalini, but damn your driving scared the crap out of us! There was a night of meaty debauchery over in Darling Harbour full of kangaroo and various and sundry other barbecued meaty goodness with my friend Daniel who is the leader of what has become my Australian family; the folks at Supanova. Then, of course, we imbibed at the oldest pub in Sydney, with our writer friend Andrew Warrilow and his lovely gal Salina and my saucy belly-dancing friend Tamara. Then, of course, we hit a few other lesser-known pubs and much beer and wine was consumed.

The Hinterlands Call…

So after enjoying Sydney as much as we could, it was time to get to work! Perth, and Wai Con, with thousands of awesome cheering Anime fans, were calling us. So away we flew. The Con was awesome enough to rent me a car for the few days we were there. Thanks again, you guys! Now I have driven on the left in several countries, so that was not a worry. I have only wrecked once on the left and that was full frontal into a soft roadside bank of fine Irish soil. But that is another story.

We arrived at the hotel and to our surprise we received a courtesy upgrade to the Penthouse Suite; 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 15 foot ceilings, a wrap around deck and a lovely fully stocked kitchen. And yes, we threw parties every damn night. There was booze a-flowin’, music a-playin’, and beautiful people all around, including the belly dancer from Sydney. There was some party naughtiness to be sure, but discretion warrants that I stay mum on the subject. Hee hee.

As you know by now, I am a full-on Foodie and my pal Dave had yet to enjoy the yumminess that is Kangaroo. So one evening we made our way to a place called Lava where they bring out the meats on a little rock slab heated to 400 degrees (I’m assuming Celsius). We had Kangaroo, Emu, Crocodile, and wild Boar. And it was all pretty tasty. The night was lovely, but the company of the beautiful young Perthian
to my left was the attraction of the eve. Still tryin’ to woo that one. Wow. But damn is food expensive down under! Jeesh. Oh, and much wine was consumed.

The Con itself was great. I LOVE Australian Cons! The Aussie fans are my all time favorite. They get rowdy just like me. It all started with the opening ceremonies where I snuck in from the back of the theatre with mic in hand and started beat boxing my way down the steps. Finally the crowd of around probably 500 people noticed where I was and we all got noisy! Fun, fun, fun. My panels were all packed and there was plenty of silliness to go around. And so many cuties! I don’t know what you Aussies are doing, but keep it up.

The Wine, Women, And Song Part

We couldn’t dream of visiting the lovely town of Perth without a little side trip to the Swan Valley for some wine tasting. I had been there before thanks to another awesome Aussie Con, Supanova. And that time I was there with peeps from Heroes, Star Wars, Watchmen, Twilight, and one saucy fetish model, my favorite. But this time it was much more intimate with friends old and new. We hit many wineries,
a chocolate factory and a honey store with a strange little man running the place. We acquired John Robertson, a very funny comedian, for this jaunt and by the end we had laughed ourselves silly. Our thanks to Wade, who was our patient and oh so sober driver for the day. By the end of the day we were so full of wine; my blood type had become fine Australian Syrah. But we did not stop there. Once back at the Penthouse, the party raged on. And of course, much more wine was consumed.

For our final day, Dave and I roamed around Fremantle. We trod barefoot on the beach and dipped our toes in the Indian Ocean. We ate some really tasty fish and chips, but the BEST calamari I have ever tasted right at the water’s edge. But okay Australia, what is the deal with you skimping on the Ketchup? You charge for every little packet and it ain’t cheap! So I ask in the nicest way for you all to please unclench and allow the condiments to flow freely. It just makes it all better. You will thank me later.

So once we left Fremantle we had to turn in the car, hop on a 5 hour flight to Sydney, endure a 7 hour layover and hop on another 15 hour flight back to L.A. We did head back in to Circular Quay for a bite of breakfast at Pancakes to wish the awesome town a fond farewell. So Sydney and Perth; you are 2 of my favorite cities and I have amazing memories that keep me smiling. I shall return! In fact, I have been
asked to return for Supanova in 2012 and 2013.

Thanks to all who made this trip another wonderful trip down undah: Daniel, Andrew, Salina, Tamara, Trina, Wade, John, Rebecca, Phil, and of course my best pal, Dave. So yes, my dear Australia, I will return to you, and we will dance again. And much much beer and wine will be consumed.

Hey Australian fans! Check out Supanova. Stop in next year and tell Spike hi!

Memories Of My Japan

Spike Spencer: Memories of My Japan

By Ani DotME 1 week, 6 days ago

An Anime voice actor’s magical first visit to the place that makes it all possible.

I sit silently as the last tiny bit of hair falls from high atop my head to settle at my feet. The high pitched whir of the antique looking shaver dies down as my barber Yanagi, a very ebullient monk, looks at his masterpiece. He has just balded a Gaijin. And he couldn’t be happier. And neither, in fact, could I.

I am in Mt. Koya, Japan, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. It is October. The leaves of the Japanese Maples are turning and the brilliant hues absolutely explode in blazing reds, oranges, yellows, and even purples. Monks in full traditional robes walk solemnly everywhere in this tiny mountaintop town. 3 hours, a few trains, a short tram ride and you are there. Mt Koya is known as the world headquarters of the Koyasan Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism as well as the burial place of Kobo Daishi. I walked the Okuno-In, the inner sanctuary and surrounding forest that serves as a cemetery. It is stunningly beautiful, especially at night when you can barely see the trail as there are almost no lights at all and the moonlight is blocked by the huge trees standing vigil over the site. I am expecting a Ninja to leap out at any moment. At the end of the trail the tomb of Kobo Daishi is a sight to behold. It is a hall of a thousand lanterns simply known as Lantern Hall or Hall of the Lamps. It is glorious, it is beautiful, and it is cold! I’m now bald, remember?

I hadn’t planned on going bald, but staying at a monastery, it seemed like the right thing to do. And I knew they had the utensils. So why not? Mt. Koya was a perfect snapshot of ancient Japan, and it was one of the last places I visited. But there was so much more I had seen…

Why was I in Japan? Well, since a large portion of my career has come from there, I figured I needed to visit the homeland. I needed to get a handle on the culture that I had revered all my life. I had trained in Aikido. I had been a lover of all things Japanese for a long time. And by a random twist of fate I was now immersed in translating one of their biggest imports to the Western world: anime. I was there to visit a friend who was also a producer of Anime, so I was also writing everything off my taxes.

That’s right folks, I’m a frickin’ genius.

Time warp!

Upon arrival in Tokyo I was met by incredible culture shock right away. I stared at the Japanese style toilet and thanked my lucky starts that a Western style toilet was nearby. Oy, how do they do it? I was struck almost immediately at the accurate portrayal that anime gives of Japan, especially in the case of the school children. Yes, they look exactly like that! Except that I never saw their eyes get wide as saucers, nor there mouths open wide enough to swallow a spider monkey. But then again, I was only there for a short time…

After a quick and adventurous train ride, I was at my friend’s place and got to see a traditional modern Japanese home; tiny, every inch of space utilized and thoroughly modern. Loved it. While staying there I experienced my first earthquake. It was tiny, but a terrible reminder of what had recently happened in Kobe and what sadly was to come years later. We hit the town and visited all the places of note; Shinjuku, Roppongi, and several palaces, pagodas and shrines of all kinds. I felt tall, because of course, there, I was. I experienced Japanese foods that were completely exotic and unknown to me. I fell in love with Gyu Don, Tonkatsu, and, of course, Miso Soup! YUM! One awesome moment while walking the streets of Tokyo was when a little boy – dressed exactly like every child in every Godzilla movie I had ever seen; backpack, cap, shorts, perfect – noticed that I was American and decided to try his “Engrish.” As he walked by, he sang “hello” at the top of his voice, but it came out “Harrooooooooooooo!” And he sang that over and over until he vanished around a corner down the street. Awesome.

Tokyo is AMAZING, without a doubt, but I had places to go. First stop, Beppu on the south island of Kyushu. This was a long trip filled with many things so I will try to be quick and hit the highlights. Beppu is a sort of Vegas for the Japanese. It’s a great spot to visit. It is a long trip on the Shinkansen Bullet Train but totally worth it. I ate at my first Robatayaki and it was wonderful. There was a wall of meat and I had no idea what most of it was, but I was in heaven. I may have eaten horse, but not sure. Seriously, Kyushu is known for that. I checked out Monkyland (no that’s not a mis-spelling. Well, it is, but not there) and yep, saw a lot of monkeys. Checked out the Hells of Beppu, several and various types of natural hot springs and geysers all bubbling and boiling in beautiful colors. I ate an egg that was boiled in one of the springs. The sulphur actually gave it a bit of flavor and the little tiny plastic fish bottle filled with soy sauce put it over the edge of nifty. At one stop, I tasted teas that were beyond description. I really should have written them down, but I can’t write Kanji. Experienced my first Japanese bath at a Minshuku with a natural hot spring. I’ll never forget the experience of soaping up on little stools and giggling like school kids with my lady before hopping in the tub all sparklingly clean. And at a sort of Japanese “Denny’s” I ordered an Omeret Rice. Yes that is a rice omelette and it was darn tasty.

Next stop: Hiroshima! But firstly, a brief visit to Miyajima, a lovely little island near the city known to be full of deer. And they weren’t kidding. Not 5 minutes off the ferry, a deer bit at my partner’s travel pack and broke the strap. Little F***er! Took the funicular to the top of the island and hoofed it back down stopping at a little café in the woods where I tried Udon for the first time. And so did the little deer that invaded our table. Had to fight him off with a seat pillow. Little F***er! But overall a great little island full of beautiful scenery and wildlife. In fact there are also monkeys that roam wild there. I even saw a monkey jump out and do a hit and run on a lady and grabbed an orange out of her purse. Little F***er!

Hiroshima is a BIG city. They definitely came roaring back after the horror that decimated the city so long ago. I stood at ground zero and strolled around the A Bomb Dome – the only building that survived the blast – and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The memorial that stood out to me was the crane memorial to Sadako Sasaki, a 12 year old girl who survived the blast. She thought if she folded 1000 cranes, she would live. Sadly, she did not. And people bring chains of folded cranes in her memory and lay them at the memorial.

Hiroshima was where I first experienced Nabemono, a Japanese one-pot stew. Just throw all kinds of goodies in and turn on the heat. When it boils, dig in! It’s great stuff. There are so many things to see in Hiroshima, and I can’t really describe them all, but the city is obviously very modern. You must visit Hiroshima Castle and the incredible gardens of the city. I will say, a memorable moment was sitting at breakfast in a Mr. Donut and hearing the theme song from “Shaft” playing on the radio. Brilliant.

Next stop: Kyoto! Stayed at a little Ryokan with the oldest massage chair on the planet. It beat the crap outta me. There are so many frickin shrines in Kyoto it would take you forever to see them all, but I tried. My favorite was the Golden Temple of Kinkakuji. It is stunning. The temple is actually covered in gold – gold leaf. When the lake on which it sits is still, the temple has a mirror reflection that will just take your breath away. I also enjoyed the Zen garden of Ryoan-Ji Temple. And who could forget the Imperial palace and Noji Castle? There’s just sooooo much to see in Kyoto. So be sure and put Kyoto on your bucket list. And be sure to walk around Gion, known as the Geisha district and you just might catch a glimpse of a working Geisha. There are tons of fabulous tiny little eateries to check out, but you might need a guide. And you have to swing by the Toei Uzumasa Eigamura (also known as Kyoto Studio Park). This is where they film Samurai and Kung Fu movies. They have fun shows and even a mechanical ninja on a wire that silently creeps overhead. You can walk ancient Japanese streets and imagine you are there. It made me feel like a kid again.

And then we moved to finish up our trip in Tokyo again by sampling as many beers as we could buy from vending machines in the street. Seriously, huge honkin’ bottles of beer available to anyone right there in the street. The Japanese LOVE vending machines. And so do I. My most memorable machine moment came when I tried a green tea and azuki bean popsicle. I loved it! And I have never been able to find one since. Damn. And after Tokyo, I would head over to Seoul in South Korea. But I would be remiss if I did not mention a couple of side trips while still there in Japan.

All over the place. Again.

I spent a day at Lake Ashi, or Hakone Lake, a lovely little resort town not too far out from Tokyo. This area is known for its fabulous views of Mt. Fuji. But sadly, on this day, the weather was not cooperating. I couldn’t see a bit of Mt. Fuji. But I did get to visit the very interesting Hakone Open Air Museum, an outdoor museum and sculpture garden. It was really impressive; art with a natural backdrop. Strolled the town and did some shopping and found some naughty tea sets featuring penis cups and such. I totally should’ve bought one.

And I cannot forget to mention that I had Kobe Beef (Wagyu, as it is actually called) in Kobe, Japan! I went to the Hotel Okura and up to the restaurant where some of the world’s finest beef was about to get in mah belly! The restaurant was empty, except for the chef. I bought a steak about the size of a deck of cards and it cost me $75. And it was totally worth it! The chef was preparing it teppanyaki style while we talked back and forth in broken phrases and he was impressed that he had an actor in front of him who had recently worked with Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality (I was cut out of the film). He went about his work skillfully and fashioned a brilliant plate with a buttery, silky, perfectly marbled and now-cubed-and-lightly-cooked-to-perfection slab of Kobe Beef love as the star. There were other items there that have all but faded into oblivion, but I will never forget that steak. I’m drooling a bit as I write this as a matter of fact.

As I left that sublime moment and prepared to head back to Tokyo, I paused at the shrine that was dedicated to the people who were lost in the deadly Hanshin Earthquake that hit Kobe in 1995. On that terrible day, a magnitude 6.8 quake hit with its epicenter only 20km away from Kobe. Subsequently, 6434 people lost their lives. It was a terrible tragedy and I said a prayer that this would never happen again. Sadly my prayers were not answered in the affirmative. The recent calamity that has befallen this beautiful land is a horrible reminder that we live in an ever-changing world. Just like they have done in the past, the Japanese people will survive and they will thrive once again. And all of our prayers will go with them. I personally have benefited immensely from their culture. I have always been a fan and I will see that amazing country again. Once I am there I will visit another temple, I will light more incense and I will again pray for the Japanese people to say thank you once more. May God watch over you all.

Peace, Love, and a Pint of Guinness,

I Am A Con Artist

Category: UncategorizedSpike Spencer FG @ 9:01 am

Spike Spencer: Man of Travel, Mystery, Voice Acting

By Ani DotME 2 weeks, 4 days ago

I am a con artist.

No, not that kind of Con Artist. My title is meant to entice you into hearing about my life as a frequent guest of Anime/Sci Fi/Pop Culture Conventions around the world. Allow me to introduce myself; I am Spike Spencer. I am an actor. As an actor, I have been incredibly fortunate in my career to have had the opportunity to work with several big name stars. I’ve even had scenes with 4 Academy award nominated actors (two of them won!). I’ve been acting for over 20 years onscreen, but nothing has gained me more notoriety than the voice acting work I have done for Japanese Anime and Video Games. Some of which include Evangelion, Bleach, World of Warcraft, and BlazBlue to name but a few. And for some crazy reason, people enjoy the work that I do and want to meet me and get my autograph. And I have to ask: how awesome is that?!

With the help of my internet friends here (Ed. note: I’m calling you Shinji for the rest of my life! – Ev.), I have decided that I will do my best to shed some light on what exactly we as frequent guests of these crazy cons do and why we do it. There are some amazing stories that come from these trips. Some are enlightening and change lives, some are scary and make you want to curl up in a ball and cry like a little girl. Some are downright hilarious, as I’ve noted in the audiobook of short stories I wrote called (insert shameless plug here) “What Happens At The Con, Stays At The Con…?” It’s definitely good for a laugh or three. I also authored a booklet for voice acting beginners called “How To Be A Frickin Genius Voice Actor, Step One.”

So what entitles me to write such stories? Well I’ll tell you: last year I hit 8 countries and 25 cities and every trip was tied to a convention. Not saying that I did 25 cons, although I’m not far off that mark, but I definitely would not have traveled to those places were it not for the cons. And, oh yes, I’ve got stories from these (those) places too. I have been attending cons seriously now for the last few years and have found it an amazing experience, both personally and professionally.

What exactly is the allure of the Con scene to an artist like myself? Well, personally, the highlight for me is the travel aspect. I have seen so many outstanding places thanks to the cons. For instance, I am typing this right now while sitting in a street side cafe in Sydney on Australia Day. I just had a nice little sausage roll and a “long black” coffee after my early morning jog over the Sydney Harbor Bridge. And what a sight. I ran along while watching the thick blanket of morning fog slowly burn away to reveal the iconic points of the Sydney Opera House, which resembled talons reaching for prey out of the mist. Kinda cool.

But I digress.

See! I wouldn’t be here if I weren’t heading over to an Anime Con in Perth. Stopovers are a very cool perk of this trade, and I have been to every major city in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Japan thanks to this business. And almost every big city in the US. Still missing Philly, but I’ll get there.

Here’s how it works: a con will contact us actors via managers, agents, or via personal email and invite us to their con. Sometimes, depending on schedules, it will be vice versa and we will attempt to contact the cons. Either way, contact is made, deals are struck, and the appearance is set. Every deal is a little different and I can not go into specific details, but I can tell you it is all business. We are a commodity. People are buying tickets in part because of our appearances, whether we’re big stars or smaller names. Some of us have products to sell, like my aforementioned books, hint hint. And of course, by getting out there and meeting fans, we garner name recognition and create marketing possibilities.

One of the best things that arises from cons are the friendships that come about with your (our) fellow guests. I have gotten work opportunities with people I would have never met were it not for these cons. Hell, I have real friends now that only a few years ago I was watching on TV series and in movies. Now I’m cooking dinners for these cats at my place. How awesome is that?! Again, all simply because of the cons.

Yes, it is all business, but it is also so damn much fun that it’s just ridiculous. I love my work. I do feel that attending cons is a very vital part of my work. There are incredible marketing opportunities for sure, but there is also the one-on-one interaction with the fans. We get to put a face to the voices that they have been listening to for so long. We get to hear them say, “Whoa, I didn’t think he would look like that.” Or, “No way that voice came outta him!” And sometimes we hear “Mr. Spencer, this is a subpoena, you have been served.”

But that is so seldom, it’s not worth mentioning really…

The point is that we also get to put faces to the people that are the entire reason we can do what we do. If it weren’t for you, dear awesome fans, we wouldn’t have jobs. So keep buying that Anime, playing those video games, and watching our TV shows.

And thanks!

I will get deeper into the nuts and bolts and incredible silliness that ensues at these cons in future articles. Today I simply wanted to introduce myself and give you an overview of how it all works and why we do what we do. I may tell you stories of hookers in Barcelona and Amsterdam, food finds in Montreal and abroad, and drinking and debauchery around the world with famous folks whose identities will never be revealed. (Sorry.)

We might talk of cuddling Koalas and Wallabies in Australia, riding jet boats in New Zealand, or hangin’ with monks in Japan. There’s also always the wine tastings in exotic places, the late night parties in various and sundry hotel rooms (over 21 only) and waking up in, uh, where-the-hell-am-I? And let’s not forget the roaring, rowdy crowds that fuel it all. You guys. Our fans, our friends, our career-shapers.

So please write in and let the folks here know that you want to hear more, and let’s start a nice ongoing chat full of silliness, adventure, and a whole lot of “Holy Crap! You did what?!?”

Because that is what keeps it interesting.

Peace, Love, and a Pint of Guinness,

Being An American

Category: UncategorizedSpike Spencer FG @ 10:45 am

Recently a buddy of mine asked what it means to me to be an American. So I just started riffing. Here it is. Enjoy.

Freedom to succeed, freedom to fail. Freedom to pray, freedom to not pray. Freedom to disagree with those in power, freedom to agree with those who speak my mind and share my values. Freedom to vote out douchebags, freedom to vote in other …douchebags (dammit). Freedom to say, yes, I will have another Big Mac, and freedom to have you hold these defibrillator paddles while I do so. Freedom to stand up against a 90% media bias that blinds the masses and say I don’t believe you. Freedom to be called a nutjob because I believe the gov’t should F*!k off and leave me alone. Freedom to take ownership of helping others and not (cowardly) leave it to faceless bureaucrats. Freedom to say Glenn Beck is damned funny. Freedom to say Jon Stewart is damned funny. Freedom to wear another colored bracelet or ribbon so people will know how much I care about, uh, something. Freedom to sit in my apartment naked and covered in pudding, cleaning my guns, while burning the flag, the Bible and the Quran for warmth on a cold winter’s day while hot naked women peel grapes and dance for my amusement and get a tax deduction for all of it because it is my new religion. Freedom to be stupid (sadly, not a crime). Freedom to say thank you to the new Republicans for reading the Constitution in to the Congressional record; it is our instruction manual after all, beeatches. Freedom to make a frickin profit. Freedom to rail against corrupt Corporations. Freedom to rail against corrupt Governmental agencies. Freedom to ride the rails and see this beautiful country. Freedom to say most homeless guys are bums. Freedom to have friends that disagree and still love them. Freedom to have brave men and women who will die for your right to chide and abuse them and decry the very action that they take that gives you the right to chide, abuse, and decry (ya dumbasses-refer to freedom to be stupid). Freedom to sit in a circle, bang drums, and sing Kumbaya and think I’m actually doing something productive. Freedom to feel proud to be an American. Freedom to say the French should just say thank you to our Grandparents. And the freedom to say all of this and tell you if you don’t like it; I hereby cordially invite you to go have sexual intercourse with yourself. And yes, I’m talking to you terrorists. I’m an American and I believe in us. Not only do I believe in us, I will fight for us. So in the immortal words of the last man in office, “Bring it on.” I am an American and we’re still coming for you.

PS- I have run out of pudding, please donate to my new religion. Butterscotch is a fave.

A belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Category: UncategorizedKagato @ 11:02 pm

Ok, so this is a bit late, I’ve been rather tied up with other stuff recently.

This is just a quick shout-out to all of you who read this blog from us at Almost Evil Minions hoping that you had a enjoyable and happy Christmas, and a safe and happy New Year.

Remember, enjoy yourself, but don’t overindulge, and whatever you do, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! Be a safe driver, or organise a designated driver if you are going out to celebrate with friends (or maybe crash at your friends place if you are celebrating at someones house)
